Upgrading, how hard or easy is it? - EdnaGarrett - 2007-02-02

Hi, been using 1.0.3 and works great. I've been very busy and haven't upgraded, saw that version 1.0.6 was out but never had the time to upgrade.

And today I just saw that 1.0.SEVEN!! was out, so I decided to (finally!) upgrade.

My question is: how difficult is it? I read the "Quick Upgrade" steps at the main page, and seems simple. BUT, I'd like to know if I'll lose all my configuration or they will be kept.

thanks

It really is that easy. You wont "lose" your configuration but rather you will reinsert the information into the new zp-config.php. The format of it has changed a little bit and a few new options are included in it now but nothing too marjor from 1.0.3.

Nothing else should be lost. I just ran a quick update of one of my beta galleries from 1.0.3 to 1.0.7 just to test for ya and it worked fine..

Just don't forget to visit /zen/upgrade.php, it's as simple as that really. :-)

I get to the login screen for the upgrade and it won't take my name/pass from the previous version. Should I be using something else?

try admin and 1234

if you changed your zp-config.php to the new version and didnt reset your admin username and password then it will be the default.

Open up your zp-config and check what you have.. if it is default.. obviously I recommend changing it.

I'm a fool. I tend to think I'm too thorough about certain things, but apparently not in this case. I'll make sure I change it back now.

Having some other strange issues after the upgrade, but I'll see if I can fix them myself before bothering you guys.

Thanks again Daniel.

Adding to the topic of quick upgrading. Maybe I was trying to be TOO quick, but following the directions:

  1. Upload/extract the new files to your server (overwrite the old ones).

So I just copied all the new files into my zenphoto directory where my old ones were. When I did this, I overwrote my albums with the new empty "albums" directory and therefore lost all my photos and albums. I have a few of the albums backed up, but gee, maybe a little note should be added to NOT overwrite your albums? I'm guessing the comments will also be gone.
If I am wrong, and these things can be resurrected, please inform...

mrbiggs - most file managers, ftp or otherwise, are smart enough not to overwrite a full directory with an empty one of the same name; I'd call that a file manager bug if anything, but I will be sure to add a note to the upgrade instructions... very sorry you lost some photos :-(

Thanks trisweb,
By File Manager do you mean my FTP software, or is it some internal thing my host should have installed? Since a search of the forum here turned up no one else who did what I had done, I gathered that maybe I missed a memo, but I'm surprised at this. I'm using Panic's Transmit for my FTP, which otherwise is just fantastic, and Laughing Squid for my host, which is nerd-approved. I'll double-check my settings and feature-list for both and see if I might avoid this in the future.
For further reference, is it ok to overwrite the cache directory? Or is that where the comments and such are stored?
