newbie asking about watermarks and password protecting - spike - 2007-11-16
Hello, I found your software at Opensourcecms and it looks great. I searched the forums and FAQ and have a couple questions.

What does it mean to "watermark" a photo? I see a lot about how to get it to work in Zenphoto, but not what it is or why you would want to use it. I'm wondering if this is something I need to pay attention to or if it's a feature that won't matter to me.

Is it possible to use .htaccess to either a) password protect my whole zenphoto site to only share with friends and family? or b) to use it in albums to share different albums with different people? From what I read, it doesn't look like different sharing is built in.
I'm not a pro webmaster or photographer but I have managed to install Wordpress on several sites. If you keep it in simple terms I can probably follow along and will greatly appreciate any answers.
If it helps, what I do now is make webpages for my pictures in iPhoto (hacking the html a little) then upload them to directories in my website that either have separate .htacces and .htpasswd files for each (or don't give out the urls for the other directories that the user could access if she/he knew it).

Watermark is an overlay over the picture for a copyright notice for example. It's an option, that you of course don't have to use.

Protect the whole gallery by password is possible. Probably your host has an option for that already. Look for folder password protection or the like in your host's admin or FAQ.
For protecting separate albums there is a theme called "default-pass" in the standard download that allows you to do that. But it's not fully implemented yet and still a bit experimental...

My host is Godaddy. As far as I know, they don't have any interface to password protect directories, except that they do have it enabled for you to edit your own .htaccess. That's what I do. At my hosting root is an htaccess that makes it "secure" and then it's password protected with .htpasswd. Some sub directories have different .htaccess files.
I'm assuming the main .htaccess file at root will not interfere with the functioning of Zenphoto. Anyway, I'll give installing it a whirl and see.
