Looks like you have some conflicting mod_rewrite rules from another system... maybe wordpress.
Try turning the mod_rewrite option to 'false' in zp-config.php

I just had (as it looks) the exact same problem, installation fine, login as admin fine, uploading fine (picture was physicaly in map shown by ftp), BUT no thumbnails/pictures shown in the gallery/album...
The solution proposed above, turning mod_rewrite in zp-config.php from "true" into "false", worked for me.
