Hi folks, is it possible for me to have Zenphoto recognise a particular field in Lightroom 3.3 that will show up as an image description in Zenphoto?

I thought that the caption field might work but no.
What do others do? Surely you don't all edit the photos individually once they are uploaded? I'm trying to avoid double-handling and since Lightroom lets me sycn metadata that seems the logical place to caption each image.

Also does the search function search the description field or just the title of the image?

Sorry, I don't know Lightroom but please try a forum search as I seem to recall that this results in Lightroom not following hte exif standard (in Photoshop the field for the image description is the description field under Image info - note I have a German version so I am not sure how that is actually named).

Also search for XMP.

What the search function searches on depends on the options set.

You would need to create a filter which retrieved this field and stored it into the desc field of the image. The XMP plugin might be a start on this.
