The date shown against an album is not relevant to my viewers. Is it possible not to show the date on album pages?

Yes, you have to modify your theme.

In your theme folder (you did not tell what theme you use) look for the index.php and/or album.php file.
Find and remove ``
do not show album date - acrylian - 2012-02-02
And possibly on album.php as well if you have sub albums.
