The two finalists in my years long personal search for the best developer-oriented CMS were Piwigo & Zenphoto. Ultimately, it was the internal design, documentation, and support that persuaded me that Zenphoto was the best of breed. However, there was a lot to like about Piwigo too.

If by 'competitors' you mean proprietary CMS vendors or so-called open-source providers who offer hobbled free-versions of their software as bait, so they can switch you up to a 'pro' version, I heartily agree. If you're referring to other open-source developers who are just offering their work to the rest of us so we can try, and maybe benefit from some novel approach to solving a problem no one else has thought of, I certainly hope they keep doing what they're doing...not bite anyone's dust.
