Hi Folks,
I installed 1.6.4. Everything was working well. I enables some "plugins", among them "rewrite", and now nothing below location "/" is found on this server. I disabled rewrite, meaning Apache does not even have the module loaded, but it seems to have had no effect. Apparently I have done something else.
Does anybody have any ideas on how to determine what I have changed?

Operating on the assumption that I was fighting with "mod_rewrite", I looked at /.htaccess.
There was a helpful comment about comprehensive rewrite rules in /zp-core/rewrite-rules.txt, and there I found a section labeled rewrite rules "created by plugins". I thought that might be my problem, since I have only three plugins active at the moment, so I comment those rules out to no effect.
Next, I copied the contents of /.htaccess to httpd.conf and that fixed my problem, but I'm not at all happy about this. I don't understand why the exact same code in httpd.conf will not work in /.htaccess, so needless to say, I still don't understand my problem.
Does anybody have any observations?

Hard to say from the outside what the problem is or if you server is just a bit special…But you actually should not and not need modify the rewrite rules.
Zenphoto generally works with and without modrewrite although the focus is modrewrite. You may need to enable modrewrite on the options. Setup tries to detect it but since there is sadly no real simple way to do so it sometimes fails so the option is off.
