Just switched from Gallery 1 to the latest ZP. Love the ease of installation and streamlined app. Hating the slowdown in trying to view my Gallery - both the front/album page, and image pages seem fairly unbearable, even after caching. I'm on a Dreamhost shared server, with Fast CGI enabled. Not sure what to do.

Yes, my originals are large, and yes, there are thousands of them. Is this speed representative of what I should expect?

TIA for any help.

Most often, I am getting totally stuck on loading the thumb pages, with a couple of thumbs loading and then the rest seeming to freeze up. I need to refresh the page a few times.

You're right, that is incredibly slow. No, the speed you are seeing is not representative of what you should expect. Something else is going on here. Have you tested the bandwidth/connectivity of your server? What is the average CPU load?

@littlewilson: You said your originals are quite large. So that might be the cause. Take a look at this, too: http://www.zenphoto.org/2007/12/troubleshooting-zenphoto/#11

Thanks for the replies. Problem is, I'm not sure how to check on all of the mentioned stats and I don't necessarily have a ton more time available for the triage. From the Dreamhost control panel, there are some basic bandwidth stats, none which seem to indicate a red flag to me, but for CPU, I have no idea.

For now, I will probably be headed to a Gallery 2 install.

I'm trying out Gallery 2 now in the hopes of some performance improvement. In the meantime, anyone who wants to check out the original zenphoto gallery in the hopes of a diagnosis can find it at www.jackmclaughlin.net/zenphoto
