I just finished re-installing zenphoto to my server (3rd time). I still have not been prompted to make up a user name and password. So I still have no way to log in. mysite.com/zenphoto/zp-core/setup.php (may not have typed that correctly here) yields an error telling me the link is broken, so I still cannot set anything up. All the files are there on the server. When I open htaccess, the box that says, "write" is clicked, but there is no pencil telling me it's writeable. Since all this worked at one time and stopped working all of a sudden, I am really, really lost.

You really do not need to start a net thread. Kind of confuses things because people do not see what has gone before.
