Within the zp-core folder like all Zenphoto core files are...

By modifing it to do so. That's your job we can't answer.

I have no idea on how to start modifying it. I'll probably post this in the SMF forums for help then.

(that is of course if i have your permission? (they won't do it without it))

Sure, we are open source (GPL v2). Just let us know if you manage anything regarding integration so that we maybe can add an entry for that on our extensions section.

I know it's been well over a year since I started this post, sorry for bringing it up but I've lost interest in Zenphoto and integrating SMF for myself, but I know that others are now wanting it to be done...... as for how I posted on the Simple Machines site, they replied with something like this "Quote from: Norv on February 01, 2010, 06:47:23 PM

In my understanding (note that I could be wrong) GPL licenses are not compatible with many other licenses, including SM license, because GPL licenses typically require that any derivatives of the software (like the bridge) and the software using them (like SMF) to be distributed under GPL as well. SM license is not GPL, so a bridge between them cannot be officially distributed by Simple Machines. (it can be written, but only for "personal use" if I may say so).

GPL just plain sucks... Unless zenphoto specifically grants an exception to the GPL restrictions (and has signoff by all copyright holders to do so), we can't build an official bridge.

That being said, none of our developers are currently working on bridges - we are working on the release of 2.0 and will take up bridges and other add-ones after that."

So, why does GPL, one of the most used licences for open source, suck and not the apparently quite special SM licence? The SM licence looks to me more like closed source (you may look at the source but never change it and never publish it). Quite limiting indeed.

It is indeed not compatible as things your licence prohibits GPL explicitly allows.

The way to do this would maybe be to not distribute the bridge with SMF itself but separately as an addon. But I guess that is something your licence regarding derivative works does not allow either.

Anyway, granting any exceptions must be a Zenphoto team decision I can't make. But I don't think we will do this.

I second acrylian. I do not propose to grant any exceptions to the GPL license. That would indeed be contrary to the spirit of the GPL license.

But there should be no issue with your making an extension to the authorization classes as provided by Zenphoto. These of course would be GPL licensed but you can protect them via trade secrets--that is, do not distribute them except to SMF users and require that they agree to keeping your intelectual property secret.
