Is there are proper or ideal way to have different thumbnail sizes on your gallery and album pages. Within an album having thumbnails sized 100x100 or thereabouts is fine, but where the galleries are being shown I'd prefer to have larger images.

I've seen this done by hardwiring the size into the php code, but I'm not sure if this is the best way to do it. If there are any themes where this is done well, I'm happy to dissect them to see how it was done.

You can't set that via options so the right way is to change your theme as you did.
