There is a flaw in the current Zenphoto PHPMailer plugin such that if it detects an error it fails to get the proper message. This is fixed in our development stream if you want to find out what the error was.

You may also have the zenphoto sendmail plugin activates. If so, it might successfully send the mail when PHPMailer does not.
