I notice I may have incorrectly or installed multiple versions.

I have ZP installed on my root. Which has the album, cache, doc_files etc folders.

I also have a galelry folder with the same information...

I may have at the begining in trying it out created a gallery folder and installed it there..

Or is there supposed to be a root then a gallery subsection/folder?

It is your choice where Zenphoto goes. (You can even have two (or more) galleries installed in different places. The current version of Zenphoto has only a handfull of files installed in the origin folder--index.php, .htaccess, favicon.ico, and robots.txt. All else are in one of the subfolders.
