I have unchecked Crop Album Thumbs to Landscape Orientation so that square images are displayed. I understand that the zpMasonry theme controls the crop size.

Is it correct that one cannot select [i]which[/i] portion of the image is cropped? If so, is there any way to change that behavior for an image? Very distressing to have a key feature of an image arbitrarily chopped off...

The custom cropping tool on the backend works only if the theme used does not use custom image crops. Your only chance would be to change the theme to use the default image sizes. That may not work conveniently if the theme requires several different image sizes.
