Crop Thumbnails option on Theme edit..what does it do?

I'm looking at the options page for a highslide theme and I've got Thumb size = 120 and the Crop Thumbnails checked with W85 and H85. What does this Crop option do? The actual thumbs that are being displayed are 120X120 and the cache thumbs are 120X120.
