What function does "Private (don't publish)" serve with Comments?

I have a public family photo album, which anyone can post Comments to. When inputting the comment, you can check "Private (don't publish)". What is the intent here? Apparently, it means only the commenter and the admin(s) can see the comment? This isn't very clear for the average user of my site (I'm not sure what users think it means when they check it!).

A way to keep an album public, but set up password access for a subset of viewers (family members in my case), such that anyone logged in via the password can see 'private' comments, would be a nice function. Am I right in concluding this doesn't exist in the standard Zenphoto install? Do any of the themes provide an option like this?

Overall Zen has been working great for us. Family members are impressed and pleased with it. With a facility along these lines it would be perfect!

Thanks,

fns

  • Comments, as displayed on the image/album pages, are not gated by passwords. If you can see the image/album you will be able to see the comments.
  • Thanks for the reply. One of my visitors who left a comment marked it "Private, Don't Publish", and it is not visible to the general public on the image page, so it is possible to see the image without seeing a (private) comment that has been left. I as admin can see it on my admin pages (and I assume the poster, can see it on their admin pages). I guess that's all private comments are for - notes between the poster and the admin?

I understand no passwords are involved WRT comments (I was proposing they might be useful in my original post, for 'comment control').

  • It also occurs to me that "Private, Don't Publish" comments allow a poster to effectively save a draft comment, come back later, update it if desired, then publish it... In which case, the fact an admin can see it is just a side effect.
