Titles and descriptions changed with latest upgrade

I'm wondering if anyone else is seeing this problem: with the latest upgrade, we lost metadata titles and descriptions of many of our pictures.
They didn't just blank out though, the picture title and description were replaced by the name of the camera with which the pictures were taken, in this case "olympus digital camera" as you can see here:
http://www.tuscanypictures.com/elba/trekking-through-the-caprili-goat-houses/caprile01.jpg.php
I've got over 500 photos coming up if I search for "olympus" and the whole site has almost 3000 pictures. Is anyone else seeing this problem for them? I don't know if it is a bug or just my site - anyone can offer some suggestions before I start redoing all the titles and descriptions again?
Thanks,
Lourdes

I have not heard about this until yet. Did you try to do a metadata refresh? Are you sure you upgraded all files? (I suggest to try this not on a live site just to be sure).

We had a problem with 1.2.7 on that: http://www.zenphoto.org/2009/12/workaround-to-prevent-accidentally-deleted-image-descriptions-in-1-2-7/ and there was a issue with GPS data in 1.2.9 which is fixed in the nightly: http://www.zenphoto.org/trac/ticket/1420

Generally Zenphoto, more specifially the GDlib, is not able to change the metadata in the images itself.
  • btw how do you get title and description automatically ? As i am still struggling with fetching title and description while uploading ... just installed nightly build but no help.

@atomicmak: You have to add them to the EXIF/ITPC metadata of your images before uploading.
  • my title and Description is already there.
    for your ref.

here are some url of files having IPTC/EXIF in it but zenphoto dosent take title.

try to uplod or test in your offline version and guide me how to get.

these all files have EXIF/IPTC with tags and all which i need.
but somehow when uploaded into zenphoto the title gets messed up with filename instead the title from exif.

and when refreshed metadata in admin it gets title.
but refreshing everytime all the filez in database for metadata update takes huge amount of time so not that workable solution.

I will try to reproduce that and get back to you.

So I made a test in my offline and online test installation and I had no problems getting the EXIF title, description and tags:
    http://zenphoto.maltem.de/exiftest/

The one image that is missing the data has no data of that type, at least not if I open it in Photoshop and view the details.
  • i have tried both online and offline but unable to set it up. can you guide what i need to do ?

also i can provide you my user/pass of my live setup so that you can upload one of that file and see what happens.

but for that i may need your email where to email you.. if you can help me out on this.
  • sent you email from your site with user/pass if you can help me out.
  • files i sent you were from my other pixelpost application . same file if i take from my hd from where i uploaded and upload to zenphot it dosent takes the title like that eagle did not took

Well, I really did nothing specifially. Just dropped the images into an album and let Zenphoto discover them. Did you try to clear the image cache? Sometimes a refresh metadata is just necessary.

Actually my collegue sbillard is the EXIF expert. He will be back around end of the week and probably of more help than I on this. I suggest you open a ticket about this issue so he will spot it. Best you link to this thread and keep the images online for him to test with, too.
  • try this and i am sure you would not get title though it has same method applied IPTC/EXIF through my CaptureNX

I will try these soon. Sorry, forgot that there is of course already a ticket.

Well, still working for me using my local MAMP and my test site. This time I even get all three titles: http://zenphoto.maltem.de/exiftest

Sorry, best you add your server config details to the ticket as well so my collegue will have all info needed in place when he returns.
  • Yes, tried the metadate refresh and checked all files were upgraded.
As the problem only comes up with photos taken from a certain camera and not with others, it is really weird that the titles and description changed from the ones we had manually worked to write.... sigh, I suppose we'll just have to rewrite titles and descriptions again manually.
    Thanks for the suggestions though.
atomicmak: zenphoto at first just takes the image file as a title, no description. it doesn't really pick up anything automatically.
  • Hello,
I am having a similar problem. I posted this question yesterday http://www.zenphoto.org/support/topic.php?id=7085 and acrylian suggested that I upgrade. I have done so and still can't get the tag (links) to work. I checked my images and the IPTC data is present. The caption (description) works just fine and the name of the tags appear, but will not return results when selected.

    Thank-you!
  • @acrylian - i have checked your exiftest and seen you have got title. here with my case when i upload the same image to zenphoto i get this in uploaded form.

    http://kevincreation.com/issues/zenphoto2.JPG

dont know whats going wrong with my offline and online setups.

see refreshing metadata everyday when uploading 2 image or 3 image per day is not a good solution as once you have 100's or 1000's of files in gallery it may be impossible to refresh metadata for 2 new files and it may take long long time.

@discovertuscanyi: No, Zenphoto takes all meta data it supports, incl. the description (see my test site for atomicmak images).

@reneesanguinetti: Some cameras do things in special ways sometimes, we of course can't built in support for all. Best is tell us what camera you exactly use if images fail.

@atomicmak: Well, I really have no idea, it might be your server configuration. Please add that to your ticket. So my collegue sbillard has all data necessary to work with.
  • thanks acrylian.
would you mind checking your email to get user/pass of my live and just try to upload in one of category to know whats the issue i am talking bout.

have sent you user/pass to your email

Well, I was finally able to reproduce the problem and it seems to be a bug in the multifile upload on the backend. I did not notice it because I most always upload via FTP. So the fix is for now to upload via FTP.

I have to pass the general issue to my collegue as he is more familiar with the metadata stuff.
  • aha finally i did tried and yes it worked when uploaded through ftp. will wait for your friend to comedown and resolve that upload issue. thanks a lot.
this thread may help a lot :)
  • I've added EXIF/IPTC info to photos through photoshop and since they've never shown up on Zenphoto (titles, description, keywords, etc) I thought it wasn't supported. Is there a better way to add this data to the picture and have it show up?
  • @discovertuscany - untill someone fix this for you. just go to admin > Overview > Refresh Metadata will resolve your issue. If you've added tags properly it'll insert title and description tag from exif to all your added images.

just try that out. i did tried and it works. though it'll take really long time if you have 100's of images hosted already.
  • acrylian Administrator, Developer
Of course there is also a metadata refresh button on each album's admin page so you don't have to refresh them all.

Refreshing is the only thing to get Zenphoto fetch it again from already known images.
  • Hello,

I have been experimenting with uploading images that include tags, title, description, etc. in the meta data. I have tried it with zenphoto versions 1.2.8 and 1.2.9. Using Picasa 3.0 to tag my images.

"Title" (returned as the filename of my image) and the "Description" appear uploading through the admin or FTP, but the tags didn't work.

"Tags" work using Picasa only when uploaded via FTP. If uploaded through admin, the tag doesn't show up, but can be added manually to the image and the "link" will work.

This approach worked for me in both versions.

I just tried an image with a title and description in the meta data added via Photoshop. It worked for me with the admin upload.

My guess is that this issue might be similar to the known one that some programs mess with the encoding of these metadata. If I recall correctly Lightroom does this (can surely be found via the forum search). Maybe Picasa is doing things "wrong", too.
  • May be. The ability to mass edit images to add tags is a function that appeared with the last upgrade I have for Picasa. If it is doing things "wrong", hopefully it will be corrected in the next version.
  • @acrylian - sir i am not a progarmmer or an expert but seems if that is the case and lightroom dosent add tags properly then uploading via ftp should'nt add title in zenphoto or even if you upload through admin area and do metadata refresh it should not grab title and apply to image.

it seems that as we discuss upload function in admin is doing something to my knowledge.
lets the expert handle his way as i just got his ticket reply and seems we may have the solution soon.

  • well we created a script to fix titles and descriptions from a past backup... but i went and tried a metadata refresh and the titles and descriptions have been lost again! so the problem seems to be connected to the metadata refresh, I can't understand why it happens only to some pictures and not all though.
i never opened a ticket for the initial problem, should i?
