i have read this part of the user-guide and understand the reasoning behind the "always cache" policy.
http://www.zenphoto.org/news/why-are-images-of-the-correct-size-still-cached-additionally

but i mostly upload ready prepared web images to my zenphoto, with pixel-exact watermarks, optimized sharpening and everything and resaving is really killing the quality of the images.

is it possible to set up the gallery to NOT resize and/or resave the cache images if there is no resize needed?
it would both increase image quality and lessen the load on the server.

I guess you did not understand the reference you cite above. Otherwise you would not state that it would "lesson the load on the server". Not caching the images actually increases the load on the server.

So the answer is no, we will not change this behavior.

But you did not state what release you are running. If your images really need no processing they are directly copied to the cache.

While there is no option or something it is of course possible to modify a theme to use the full image directly bypassing the image processor on the image.php theme page. It is of course not possible for cropped or else images.

sorry for not stating my release, that would be: 1.4.2.3 [9710]

example: first original, then cache:

http://zpg.grubernd.at/cache/archiv/grubernd_220189-4853_560.jpg

please look at the mushy details on the dress, images for the cache are not copied, but resaved.

Clear your cache.

Did you clear the image cache? Btw, you really should upgrade to 1.4.3, 1.4.2.3 is not even the last 1.4.2.x release.

how would clearing the image cache of a freshly uploaded image change the behaviour of the cache? it would just do the same thing again, wouldnt it?

will upgrade my install, yes.

Sorry, I mis-read your release version. Should have said you need 1.4.3 for the image preservation. And you will also need to purge your cache of any already cached right sized images.

i bet. =)
sadly i couldnt find a corresponding thread through my searches and only stumbled upon the help topic.
yes, i could have upgraded first. but in less than a year xubuntu has spoiled me in terms of centralized updates. on wxp i had my regular "check for updates" routine..

anyway.. thanks for the great work. =)
