i had to delete some albums via ftp and re-uploaded the same folders. now these albums have a different album id. is it possible to clear that album database and start again with album id number 1?

Sure, use either a database tool like phpMyadmin and clear the table. Also using Zenphoto with a empty albums folder should also clear the database.
