I know this is going to be a stupid question, but when I check off mod rewrite in options, all of my pages get a 404 error. If I uncheck, everything fine. I don't need mod rewrite, except as I understand, that is the only way to get the "lost password" on the login page.

The reason for this is that the necessary .htaccess file is not present. This setup does tell you that and actually should create that file for you. If setup does not: There is a htaccess file template in zp-core. Copy that to the root of Zenphoto and rename it to .htaccess. Then re-run setup.

The "lost password" link on the login page should not require Mod_rewrite.

Hmmm "lost password" or "reset password" don't appear anywhere. I am using effervesence plus theme...any ideas?

You have to access the admin page to see the login form.
modrewrite link /zenphoto/admin
non modrewrite link /zenphoto/zp-core/admin.php

You will also not get this link if there is no e-mail address on record to send the mail to.
