After installing ZenPhoto 1.4.1.2 [7836] (great work), I enabled the user_login-out plugin.
Only the password text box was visible.

(Not yet in the trunk nightly)
The admin login has and always will be primarily via the <site>/<root folder>/admin link (presuming mod-rewrite.) IF you want to allow a Zenphoto user to login from the front-end then you must enable this field. If there is a guest user name associated with a particular guest password then the field will be shown for THAT access even if the option is not set.
All that has happened on the DEV release is that we have enabled the field by default if the gallery requires a user name. No change to this [day one] behavior is planned for the current release.
The information in the user's overview (http://www.zenphoto.org/news/an-overview-of-zenphoto-users) could be out of date, since most of the options and user categories it mentions aren't in the places it quotes. E.g.: Thanks!
