I am trying to figure out how to turn off the editable properties for both image description and properties. I had a look at the template-functions.php file, where both are apparently set to false unless one is in the ZP admin area.

Where do I turn off the editable property for these things when they display?

Do you mean the inline-on-the-fly editing? That is only active if you are logged in.

Well, when the album and image pages come up in regular browser access, both the description and title fields are clickable/editable. No admin login, just browsing to page.

I am using a modified default theme, changing the CSS to match the site styling.

Then you probably have not logged out correcty. Try deleting cookies and clearing the cache manually. Safari sometimes has problems with that. Anyway, none of you visitors should be able to edit anything.
